Coherent optische communicatie systemen

Wanneer een groot aantal digitale spraakkanalen (elk 64 bits/s) moeten worden verzonden, is een breedbandig telecommunicatienet vereist. De behoefte hieraan wordt nog sterker als er ook digitale videosignalen moeten wordne overgebracht (elk 140 Mbit/s, of in het geval van HDTV zelfs 565 Mbit/s). Met de huidige stand van de techniek zijn operationele systemen van ca. 2 Gbit/s realiseerbaar. Naar verwachting zullen over 5-10 jaar systemen van 10 Gbit/s worden toegepast, en wellicht zal de behoefte aan bandbreedte nog aanzienlijk groeien. Bij dergelijke bandbreedtes zijn symmetrische en coaxiale niet meer bruikbaar, en is de monomodus glasvezel het aangewezen tranmissiemedium.
