De confocale microscoop dankt zijn 3D afbeeldingskwaliteiten aan het vermogen tot het maken van ‘optische coupes’. Naast deze 3D eigenschappen beschikt een confocale microscoop over een hoger oplossend vermogen dan met conventionele lichtmicroscopie bereikt kan worden. Na een beschrijving van het principe van het instrument zal dit gedemonstreerd worden aan de hand van diverse objecten. Tenslotte worden enkele benaderingen van optische scanning microscopie met elkaar vergeleken en hun wederzijdse merites belicht.
