Het concept van reinigen van kunstwerken met behulp van lasers wordt al langere tijd toegepast op harde beeldhouwwerken. Het reinigen van zachte schilderijen met laserstralen vormt echter een geheel nieuwe uitdaging. Omlangs is daarvoor een laser cleaning station ontwikkeld volgens mechatronische aanpak. De ontwerpopgaven lagen met name bij de optische arm voor de geleiding van de laserbundel en de xy-manipukator voor het nauwkeurig scannen van het te reinigen oppervlak.
