Laserbehandeling van athero sclerotisch vernauwde bloedvaten

In de Westerse wereld is athero-sclerose – aderverkalking – de meest voorkomende oorzaak van ziekte en overlijden. Als door atherosclerose een bloedvat in het been dichtslibt, dan zal de bloeddoorstroming van het been verminderen. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat tijdens lopen pijn optreedt in bijvoorbeeld de kuitspieren wegens zuurstofgebrek. De patient moet na een korte afstand stoppen met lopen en kan pas verder lopen als de pijn gezakt is. De toepassing van laser is een nieuw middel om zonder operatie een bloedvatvernauwing op te heffen. Zelfs een volledig afgesloten bloedvat kan weer opengemaakt worden.
